May 2004: MAYDAY 0. So sweet, so tender and young. The very name, with that picaresque “0”, belied a sense of innocence and wonder.
Yes yes, all that’s well and good, you’re saying, but why “Mayday 0”? Why not start the count with something more traditional, like a “1”. Well, the answer is really quite profound: we lost the tapes. Or, more specifically, we made the horrible mistake of giving them back to their creators after the screening was over. The first Mayday was a casual affair of our spare time, attended by our closest friends, and ripe with warm sushi. It laid the groundwork for the colossal and beautiful machine of the later Maydays, and for that we owe it everything.
